Prof. Matsuoka is an Antarctic glaciologist working in both inland and coastal regions mainly using ice-penetrating radar. After receiving his PhD from Hokkaido University in Japan, he moved to the University of Washington in 2002 where he completed his postdoctoral training. He became a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington in 2005, where he currently serves as an Affiliate Professor. He moved to the Norwegian Polar Institute in 2010. He is the Norwegian Representative to the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) Physical Science Group, and he chairs the RINGS Action Group under SCAR. He has founded and led a free GIS data package, Quantarctica, which is widely used in the Antarctic community.
報告簡介
The Antarctic Ice Sheet is the largest source of uncertainty for future sea-level rise. While computer models have improved dramatically, essential observational knowledge is still largely lacking. In this lecture, the presenter will illustrate this issue using the availability of bed topography data as a case study and discuss how it can be addressed through unique international collaboration. Additionally, Quantarctica will be presented, a free geographical data package for Antarctica, the Southern Ocean, and sub-Antarctic islands.
